Boat Diving in Melbourne
Boat diving opens up a world of dive sites that are inaccessible from shore. Port Phillip Bay and the waters around the Port Phillip Heads are home to world-class wreck dives, dramatic reef walls, seal colonies, and underwater terrain that ranges from gentle sponge-covered slopes to sheer drop-offs plunging beyond 60 metres. Several charter operators run regular trips from Queenscliff and Portsea, catering to everyone from newly certified Open Water divers to experienced technical divers.
Popular Boat Dive Sites
The Heads area between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean is where Port Phillip Bay meets Bass Strait, and the tidal exchange creates rich nutrient flows that support extraordinary marine life. Sites like Lonsdale Arches, Castle Rock, and The Grotto feature swimthroughs, walls draped in colourful soft corals and sponges, and dense fish life. Pope's Eye, an incomplete colonial-era fort, is home to an Australian fur seal colony and makes for a unique shallow dive surrounded by curious seals.
Melbourne's wreck diving is equally compelling. The Ex-HMAS Canberra, a deliberately scuttled guided-missile frigate resting in 15-33 metres, is one of Australia's premier wreck dives. Several J-class submarines from World War I lie scattered across the bay floor, including the intact J5 at 36 metres. Historic merchant wrecks like the Eliza Ramsden and the Rotamahana add variety, while the purpose-sunk Casablanca offers a challenge for technical divers at 57-62 metres.
Our Charter Operators
Scubabo Dive Victoria operates two custom vessels — Seadragon and Medusa — from both Queenscliff and Portsea. They offer a wide range of dive trips from recreational reef and wreck dives through to technical diving, freediving sessions, and snorkelling with seals at Pope's Eye. Scubabo also runs PADI dive courses from beginner to professional level.
Bay City Charters is based in Queenscliff and provides private boat diving tours across Port Phillip Heads and Bass Strait. With an experienced crew and a focus on quality diving experiences, Bay City takes divers to some of Victoria's most spectacular reef, wall, and wreck sites. They also offer equipment rental including tanks, wetsuits, and accessories.
Chimney Rock Charters is a locally owned operation run by Neale, who has been chartering in and around Port Phillip Bay for over 12 years. Operating a smaller vessel with a maximum of 10 divers, Chimney Rock offers a more personalised experience and can access less-dived sites that larger boats cannot reach. Pickup is available from both Queenscliff and Portsea.
Planning Your Boat Dive
Boat dives in Port Phillip Bay are strongly influenced by weather and tidal conditions. The Heads area experiences significant tidal currents, and operators will adjust dive sites based on the day's conditions to ensure safety and the best possible diving experience. Most operators require divers to hold a minimum Open Water certification and carry their own equipment, though rental gear is available from some operators. Booking in advance is recommended, especially for weekend dives during summer when demand is highest.
